This week something not necessarily Agile, but interesting nevertheless: The Cultural Dimensions Framework by the late Geert Hofstede.
It shows the effects of a society's culture on the values of its members, and how these values relate to behaviour, using statistics.
It uses 6 criteria, expressed on a 0-100 scale, comparing many countries:
Power Distance Index
Collectivism vs. Individualism
Uncertainty Avoidance Index
Femininity vs. Masculinity
Short-Term vs. Long-Term Orientation
Restraint vs. Indulgence
In a globalised world, this framework helps avoid conflict; improve collaboration; increase engagement; and improve your organisations effectiveness.
There is too much detail to cover in a post, so please refer to my presentation attached. It includes a case study on Sweden’s Covid response, and useful links.
Key take outs of Hoffstede's model
Improve your communications by tuning into subtle cues, observe but don’t judge, don’t take behaviour personally, understand your stereotypes and learn about other cultures with an open mind.
If you'd like to learn more, have a look at below presentation, which I shared with my colleagues at Singtel Optus in November 2020.
